Introduction to SSS and outline of scheme of work

Dear teacher,

Welcome to Start Something Social – a Scheme Of Work to be used with a small group, in class, across a year group or a whole school. This Scheme Of Work can be used across Key Stages 2 to 5. It has six units to support you in exploring social entrepreneurship with your students. Towards the end of this Scheme Of Work we want you to feel more confident in supporting young people coming up with ideas and setting up social ventures.

For your own planning purposes, Start Something Social has significant cross-curriculum links. There really are no restrictions in which subject or lesson this can be part of – Business, Sports and History as well as core subjects such as English, Maths and Science. When young people are supported in setting up social ventures we have found:-

  • Leading a social project or venture is a powerful learning and personal development experience for a young person. 79% of young people with a social venture felt more employable.
  • An early experience of social entrepreneurship can generate a longerterm interest in social action amongst young people. 73% saw running their social venture as a future option.
  • Young people can create sustainable ventures that survive into the longer term
  • Young people bring a distinctive approach to engaging their peers in projects, which seems to be particularly valued by other young people
  • Young social entrepreneurship has potential to create significant economic and social benefits.

We hope you find using Start Something Social a fun and rewarding resource in your school and help create social entrepreneur that want to make the world a better place.
